Beneficial Essential Oils for Fall and Winter

Spice and citrus are some of the best essential oils to use during the season of fall. The weather is getting colder, darker and shorter. Spice and citrus scents are comforting; almost as comforting as warm apple pie.

Aromatherapy and essential oils are a great way to boost your immunity and help with the symptoms of colds, coughs and flus.

Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg and Cardamom oils are all comforting, warming and energizing. We recommend you use these oils with a diffuser or by diluting them with a carrier oil (such as grape seed, almond or jojoba carrier). It is not recommended to put spice oils directly on the skin, as the oils are very concentrated and may irritate some skin types.

Mix some spice and citrus oils together; they work well together.Orange works particularly well with Cinnamon, Clove and Nutmeg oils.

Sandalwood and Frankincense are also earthy oils that are suited to the Fall Season. Blending them with citrus oils also works well.

Essential Oils for Sleep

Experiencing trouble with insomnia? You're not alone – a lot of people worldwide suffer from this problem.

I have often experienced trouble sleeping, especially when I'm experiencing a lot of stress and anxiety in my life. I've often found myself waking up in the middle of the night, worrying about a major issue in my life, and unable to get back to sleep, no matter what I do. I have used essential oils (mostly through diffuser) when experiencing this and have found them helpful. After using the oils, I've found myself back to sleeping through the night.

Valerian Oil

The Valerian root has been used for thousands of years for its calming and emotionally grounding effects. One of these uses has been Valerian's ability to promote restful, undisturbed sleep. It is thought that the active components of Valerian balances the body's cycles and promotes sleep. It is also used to treat depression, anxiety and other nervous conditions.

Roman Chamomile Oil

Roman chamomile essential oil is one of the most versatile of all oils used in aromatherapy. A little goes a long way with this oil and its calming and sedating properties and it is considered a natural sedative. It may also have properties to treat allergy sufferers, bringing comfort to irritated nasal passages, which could be an advantage if your lack of sleep is due to allergic complaints!

Lavender Oil

Lavender is well-known for its calming and relaxing properties. This is probably the most popular essential oil choice for sleep aid, relaxation and anxiety relief. It combines all three of these effects in order to help you relax and get a good night's sleep, and provides a lovely scent for your room as well.

How to Use the Oils:


A diffuser is an excellent choice. The scent from the diffuser will spread through the room you've placed it in (in this case, most likely your bedroom). It's a good idea to start this about an hour before bedtime, so when you enter the room the calming aromatherapy scent has already spread.


You can even put 1-2 drops of your chosen essential oil on your pillow or nearby the top of your bed (about a half hour before bed). The scent will be there to lull you to sleep.

Relaxing Essential Oil Bath

Lastly, why not add a few drops of your chosen oil to an evening bath that also contains Epsom salts? A bath is a great way to wind down after a long day, and adding in these oils along with the Epsom Salts will assist in relaxation. Throw in a cup of Chamomile or Sleepytime tea and you'll be ready to snooze.

One other tip includes NOT using any electronics (computer, tablet, smartphone) an hour before bed. That's a challenge for all of us, but it's one worth trying if you'll get a better night's sleep!

Aromatherapy and Essential Oils for Acne

I'm guessing if you are reading this article, it's unfortunately because you are experiencing issues with acne.

Unfortunately, acne is a problem for many people through all stages of life. As a result, there are thousands of products out there used to treat acne, everything from creams to topical gels, face masks to face washes, pore strips and blackhead removers. It's overwhelming for anyone to visit a drug store to be faced with a massive wall filled with acne treatment products. These treatments also vary widely in price, but some can cost you hundreds of dollars. And there is no guarantee of results.

Have you ever thought of using essential oils for acne treatment?

Essential oils are a natural treatment for acne and acne scars, allowing you to avoid the harsh chemicals that are included in some commercial face washes, masks and creams. These oils contain strong plant extracts that may be used to fight a number of health conditions. In this case, we'll focus on oils that fight acne. Before using any of the oils – Please note that non-diluted essential oils may irritate the skin. Be sure to check the labeling on your product before using. You can dilute essential oils further in coconut oil, jojoba oil, aloe vera gel or even water. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to have a patch test first (I recommend on the inner arm) just to ensure the oil will not irritate your skin.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is widely considered the most successful essential oil for fighting acne. It is taken from the leaves of the tea tree, or Melaleuca alternifolia, native to Australia. It was traditionally used by the indigenous Bundajalung people of Australia to treat a variety of conditions, including sore throats, coughs, colds and a variety of skin ailments, including wounds. It was likely successful in treating these conditions because of its antibacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. It can not only kill acne-causing bacteria, but can restrict its growth as well. It may also help reduce the skin's oil production, which may help to reduce future breakouts.

Geranium Oil

Derived from the geranium plant, this is a great oil for oily, acne-prone skin. It is also anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, so its kills and fights growth of acne-causing bacteria.

As an added bonus, it also has anti-aging properties. It is an astringent and is amazing for toning, tightening and regenerating skin. It has additional properties that allow the oil to assist in healing scars as well.

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil is an often overlooked herb that also does wonders for revitalizing skin, including adding flavor in the kitchen! It's well known for its abilities to reduce excess oil on skin. In addition, it also contains anti-inflammatory properties known to ease redness and puffiness, which is perfect for treating breakouts. Beside helping to clear skin, rosemary also improves circulation, which can help firm and tone. It's a versatile oil that makes a great addition to your beauty routine.

Frankincense Oil

Frankincense oil is another great oil for acne-prone skin. This oil acts in an anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory way. It is known as a healing and restorative oil, in addition to battling pimples effectively. It also acts as a natural toner and tightens the skin, reducing wrinkles and scars, so it may be able to do double-duty as an acne fighter and anti ager!

Oregano Oil

Not just amazing in the kitchen, oregano in its essential oil form is also amazing for getting rid of pimples. The natural antiseptic and antibacterial properties of oregano oil make it handy for spot treating zits. As with the other oils, oil of oregano has amazing anti-bacterial properties. It also has many other uses, notably being used to prevent colds.

Ylang Ylang Oil

Ylang-Ylang essential oil comes from the flowers of a tropical tree (Cananga odorata) native to South-East Asia. Ylang ylang is also very popular for it's lovely floral scent, but is also used in a variety of applications, particularly aromatherapy and perfumery.

In traditional herbal medicine, ylang-ylang oil was used extensively in topical treatments for skin and hair problems. The oil was also to have calming and anti-pyretic (anti-fever) properties. Ylang-ylang oil also has a positive effect on skin tone and can improve oily skin.

Essential Oils for Acne Treatment

Spot Treatment

Best used with: Tea Tree oil or Oregano Oil

How to do it:

Tea Tree Oil: You can place your tea tree oil on acne undiluted (once again, I always recommend a skin test first) or mix a few drops of tea tree oil with aloe vera gel. Apply to the affected area 1-2 times per day. If your skin tends to be dry, I would recommend diluting the oil as tea tree oil can dry out your skin quickly.

Oregano Oil: It's best to dilute oregano oil before putting it on your face. Mix together equal parts oregano oil and a carrier oil, like jojoba, olive or coconut oil. Then, dab the diluted mixture onto the trouble spot regularly until until your skin clears up.

Create Your Own Facial Oil (Moisturizing!)

Best used with: Any of the above oils.

How to do it:

Pick out your favorite carrier oil (this could be coconut oil, jojoba oil, argan oil or even olive oil – though I'd recommend coconut!). Then choose your preferred essential oil and add around 4-7 drops. Do this slowly, mixing or shaking the container your oil is in. The scent should be detectable, but not overpowering. Then, you're done!

Essential Oils for Asthma

Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm. Common symptoms include coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and wheezing.

It is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Its diagnosis is usually based on the pattern of symptoms, response to therapy over time and spirometry. Medical treatment is required for this condition and often used with an inhaled short-acting beta-2 agonist (such as salbutamol) and oral corticosteroids. Symptoms can be preceded by avoiding triggers, such as allergens and irritants as well. Essential oils may also be used, in conjunction with medical treatment, to combat the systems associated with this disease. Use of essential oils as detailed below should always be used to assist conventional medical treatment.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus's strong scent opens up the congested airways of the lung. Eucalyptol, a chemical that breaks up mucous and phlegm, is the active ingredient in this oil that enables asthmatics to breathe easily. It's great to inhale this oil through steam. Add a few drops of the oil to warm water, either in a pot or steam inhaler. Gently lean over and breathe it in (you may even want to place a towel over your head to get the full effect). This will expand the constrained airways.

Also a great one to use if you have a cold or flu!

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense oil is an expectorant with anti-inflammatory properties. It eliminates congestion from the nasal passageways and lungs.

An added bonus is that this oil combats nervousness, anxiety and stress. If you're feeling stressed too, this may be one you want to use.

It's great as a chest rub – adding a few drops of the oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil, and apply! Or add a few drops to a diffuser and breathe in the scent.

Oregano Essential Oil

Oregano oil has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. This oil is also used to keep away colds and flu. A good use of this oil is to create a mist spray. Add 25 drops of oregano oil to 5 ounces of water, and use as needed to relieve symptoms.

Thyme Essential Oil

Thyme oil is an expectorant, with both antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It is thought to boost immunity and strengthen the respiratory system. It fights cold, cough and all symptoms associated with asthma. It's great used in steam or vapor therapy to ease breathing and reduce wheezing.

Clove Essential Oil

This oil has effective analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties that allow it to combat asthma. Do not apply clove oil directly to your skin. If you would like to use it as a chest rub, ensure that it is diluted with a carrier oil first.

Properly Applying Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated and therefore it is not recommended to apply them in their pure form directly to the skin. Using a small amount of oil diluted in water will provide better results.

Aromatherapy can be achieved by several different methods. Knowing how to properly use essential oils in different applications will lead to greater benefits.

  • Baths – adding aromatherapy oils to your bath water is an easy way to achieving their health benefits. By simply adding a few drops to the bathwater and blending before you submerge yourself, the aroma will trigger your olfactory methods. This is turn will help to increase your circulation and bring help to bring out physical harmony.
  • Lotions / Creams / Salves – by adding a few drops of fragrant oil to your favorite lotions, for example cocoa butter or shea butter will stimulate healing properties. To create your own fragrant blend, apply to any unscented lotion.
  • Aromatherapy Vapor Inhalation – this is the foundation of aromatherapy treatments. Steam inhalation is a great way to alleviate sinus or respiratory issues. Add five drops of aromatic oil to steaming water and inhale the aroma using a towel tent; this will keep the aroma from escaping.
  • Aromatherapy Massage – this is one of the most popular methods of aromatherapy. By blending drops of fragrant oil with your favorite lotion (eg almond, cocoa butter or shea butter) can affect the body both psychologically and physiologically depending on which essential oil you use. To energize the senses, peppermint is great where lavender is more of a relaxing scent. Essential oils used during massage trigger the olfactory methods. Some oils may also be absorbed into the skin and the blood stream to produce healing effects.
  • Compress – by adding a few drops of your preferred oil into a bowl of warm water, immerse a washcloth into the blend and wring out. Use the washcloth as a compress by applying to the area of ​​the body that needs pain relief. Warm essential oil compresses are great for sore muscles, forehead and stomach pains and menstrual cramps.
  • Dishwater / Clothes Washer / Dryers – the anti-bacterial properties of essential oils can dramatically promote greater hygiene. By adding a few drops of lemon to your dishwater will clean the dishes and makes the kitchen smell great. Use Purification essential oil in the laundry to kill bacteria and germs found in clothes. The same can be made for the dryer by applying the oil to a wet towel or from a mist spray bottle directly into the dryer.
  • Cleaning / Disinfecting – apply a few drops of lemon, spruce, or fir oil on a dust cloth or ten drops in water in a spray bottle to polish furniture and to clean and disinfect kitchens and bathrooms.
