Eucalyptus Essentials Oils Help Prevent Summer and Winter Colds

Getting colds is extremely uncomfortable and annoying. The cold itself causes nasal drainage, coughing and down time. Preventing a cold is the simplest way to deal with a cold but what do you do if you get a cold. Using Eucalyptus essential oils can help you get a cold. I know they've helped me.

Every year starting about mid-February or March in 1998 till about 2000 I would get a winter cold. In 1998 not only did I lose my voice for a month but I was bedridden from that cold. Every year my primary care physician ran the same tests then told me to use Robitussin dm, chloreseptic spray and drink tea. It took time and was uncomfortable but it worked and the cold went away.

After my cold in 2000 I decided to make a change. Knowing Eucalyptus Essential oils were a useful tool to prevent and overcoming colds I searched the best methods to use them. I started to use Eucalyptus Essential oils to prevent getting a cold. It worked. I no longer got colds. Following are a few steps that I use to prevent colds.

First, I put a drop of Eucalyptus Radiata, a gentle form of eucalyptus, in my neti pot with sea salt and warm water. I tip the neti pot to one nostril and inhale a little of the water sea salt eucalyptus oil liquid. Then I do the opposite nostril alternating till the liquid is gone. Most of the time the mixture is right but sometimes it is a little too strong. Then I remix it or add more warm water to it. While it cleans each nostril it opens each nasal passage and after a few minutes I can breathe through my nose again. Some of it makes its way down the back of the throat to help clean it.

Next, I use Eucalyptus Dives or Eucalyptus Globulus and apply them to my throat and chest. I still drink tea. When I hear the news that a lot of people are getting colds I diffuse and apply the eucalyptus oils. Since I started using them I have not had to visit my doctor for a cold.

Occidentally, I have gotten a summer cold being around a friend with a cold. Unfortunately not expecting to get a cold at that time of year I was unprepared. When it did happen I immediately used the oils and the cold passed quickly. Even though that has not happened in a long time I know which oils to use and keep them stocked. As long as I use the essential oils I do not get colds.

Preventing colds requires investment of time and effort but it pays off when you do not have to experience blowing your nose, coughing, and making a doctor visit. Using the different Eucalyptus essential oils helps you build protection and defend against catching a cold or if you have one they help you get the cold. Carrying the oils with you and keeping your neti pot and supplies close during those times of year when people start catching a cold, you can easily use the oils to assist you in keeping those colds away from you.

Aromatherapy traditionally enjoys a well-known history of treating various conditions that people encounter with mind and body ailments, but it's gaining a reputation for its effectiveness on pets as well. Arthritis starts gradually from a small pain that develops in one area of ​​the body and travels to several areas of the body making a person wonder what is happening. Essential oils are the best form of aromatherapy for animals. But, each animal may react differently to different smells or they can be sensitive to some aromas making it necessary to dilute oils before using on you or the pet. You should also watch that any candles that are used are not left unattended because they can be easily knocked over by the pet. The pet may even try to lick the hot liquid from the candle. The same being true with dried potpourri flowers and are not recommended either because the pet could try to eat them. Keep the oils well away from the pet's reach. Incense: The 60’s and Beyond

For most of us who grew up in the 1960s, it was an incredible formative time that we will never forget. For those who did not experience the decade themselves, but who study it, get inspiration from it, and continue to mine veins of thought and spirit that were first opened so many years ago, it was a wonderful time as well. The counter culture of hippies was born in the mid-60s, and continued to gain momentum until the mid-70s, by which time it had seemed fizzled. But the currents of time and popular culture preserved and transported certain accepted truths, belief systems, subcultures, world views, and philosophies from the 60s down through the years. So much so, that for many the 60s are still very much alive in many ways. One area is the New Age, holistic health movement that is essentially based on values ​​and attitudes born in that magic decade, and one of the elements of that system of beliefs is aromatherapy. As with so many of these elements, aromatherapy – the belief that a scent can change human consciousness – had its birth in the 1960s with the boom in popularity of incense.

A little history:

When the counter culture first blossomed on the west coast in the mid-1960s, incense was a little-known oddity used in a few independent religious groups, by a few advanced individuals, and of course by the Catholic church. It was not a common thing to see for sale in any major department store or other commercial outlet, and it was not easy to find period. What brought it to its first stage of early notice was the large number of travelers to the east. Religions and philosophies from India, Japan, Tibet and China had all the rage in the new movement, and it was a rite of passage for many to make a journey to the east, bum around, and bring back some necessary items. One of these new necessities was incense made in these exotic lands.

Bringing it all back home:

As it became more well-known, incense started popping up for sale as an import in head shops and clothing stores in areas that had sizable hippie populations. It was prized for its scent, the pleasure given by the smoke when one was in an altered state, but above all for a property that it had been used for since time immemorial – to cover up other undesirable smells. These undesired odors had in times past been the odors of human beings in their unwashed, mass forms. This is one reason churches used the sweet-smelling resins that put out voluminous clouds of smoke – of course there were other reasons too. But in the 60s, those who had started smoking marijuana had a problem – the smoke from the weed was pungent and tell-tale, and it was something that one needed to be careful about. One way to take care of the problem was with the strong incense that was being imported from overseas. Soon little brass incense burners and incense cones were part of the necessary equipment in any self-respecting doper's abode. And in this way, incense acquired an undeserved and inaccurate image that it has never quite shaken.

What's that smell?

In the decade we call the 60s, which really measured into the early part of the 70s; you could walk into a head shop, imported clothing store, a comic book shop, and various combinations of these, and enjoy the rich, strongly sweet fragrance of incense. In the popular mind, it became associated with the use of illegal drugs, so much so that there are still those who are not quite sure that that smell is not illegal itself when they smell incense. Fortunately, as the 70s wore on, the use of incense started spreading into more mainstream homes and community spaces, so that it lost much of this stigma. It has instead become associated with the New Age movement and its several permutations. The growth of aromatherapy allowed the market for incense to grow, and soon you could find the product everywhere – even in popular candle and furniture stores.

Some of the favorite scents made available in that first decade of popularity were sandalwood, patchouli, jasmine, and lavender. These were the fragrances that were waved from shops, apartments, and porches where a group of counter culture followers were found – call them hippies, freaks, or adventurers. At first these were simple recipes, but in the process of expanding their lines, such makers of incense as Nag Champ and Gonesh brought out more and more blends and made them available in cones and as joss sticks.

What's it for?

As mentioned, one of the oldest uses of incense was as a cover-up for other smells. In churches and gathering places where pilgrims and travelers came together after long periods of no access to basic hygiene, it was a useful thing to be able to light up a brazier of odoriferous resins and drive away the odors. Other uses of incense were symbolic – the smoke rising to the heavens reminded believers of the soul's eventual ascent to its maker at death – and psychological and medicinal. Fragrances had long been noticed to have an effect on the human psyche, and this effect was heightened in the 60s by the use of certain psychotropic substances. All of these uses for incense were intensified and raised to a new level during the early years of its resurgence and use in the 60s.

What it's come to?

These days, incense has a large outgrown its connection to the drug culture of the 60s, although there are still some lower socioeconomic groups that hold that association in mind. Rather, it has become connected to the idea of ​​holistic healing, of higher consciousness through the senses, and of sheer pleasure. The variety and quality of both imported incenses and those made in the US is truly incredible. Along with the growth of online life and communication technologies, there has come a growth in a subculture of incense aficionados who collect rare and expensive products from all over the world, and review those along with their less expensive examples for the many who love to read about them. A sensuous bath creates a spotted blend which lingers on your skin. This aromatherapy bath is ideal to take before a night with that special someone. The preparation for this bath requires 2 dabs of clary sage oil, 2 dabs of rose oil, 4 dabs of sandalwood oil and 2 dabs of ylang ylang oil.

As a general rule, when preparing any type of bath, you do not want to mix too many oils together. You want to add the oils only after your bath tub is full of water. This is due to the fact that the potency of the oils is reduced if you add the oils while the water faucet is running. If you are using very strong oils, it is important that you dilute the oils prior to adding them to the bath water. In addition, keep in mind that some oils may cause skin irritation and, in some cases, severe burning. Always keep an eye on your skin while taking an aromatherapy bath.

What Factors Determine Purity and Quality in Essential Oils?

Anyone who has been involved with essential oils for a little while can quickly identify a 'quality' oil. There is something about the clarity, the vibration, the subtlety, the breadth and depth of separation that makes it stand out. Some essential oils seem to have a brilliant 'three dimensional' effect, while others appear flat.

But what are the key factors that affect this quality and vibrancy?

The first factor is the plant itself. Compare the experience of eating an organic logo fresh off the vine in your garden in the height of summer, with one that has been air freighted in from the other side of the world in mid winter. They simply taste entirely different. One is vibrant, fresh, pure, energetic. The other is dull, flat, lifeless.

It is the same with essential oils. You need to use plants that have been respectfully treated, ideally wild growing or organically cultivated. Happy plants give much better quality oil.

The second factor involves the production process: Most essential oils are produced by a process of steam distillation. This can be performed under high temperature and high pressure; this brings a higher yield so the cost is less. But if you distil under low pressure and low temperature, the quality is infinite superior. In this respect, you get what you pay for.

Only a small proportion (possibly 5%) of the global production of essential oils is extremely destined for therapeutic use. The vast major goes to the flavor and fragrance industries; and they have different requirements and expectations. For example it may be more important for them that the fragrance is identical year on year, and to this end laboratory generated chemicals may be added.

Therefore if your essential oil supplier sources its products from a dealer – a middleman – there is a likelihood that the product will have been adulterated with man-made chemicals. The only way to be sure is if there is a direct connection to the farmer, drawer and distiller.

Another, more subtle but significant, area that can affect the quality of the oil, is the bottling process. Essential oils ideally carry with them the energetic vibrancy of the plant, and this may become disturbed by exposure to strong electromagnetic fields.

Finally, we need to think about intention and consciousness. It is well accepted that plants respond to the energy that we put their way. And the essential oils that they produce will respond to the environment that they are exposed to. This involves every stage of the process: cultivation, distillation, bottling, shipping, storing and retail.

Remember too that the oils can and should be tested. Methods used include optical rotation, density, refraction, GC (gas chromatography) analysis, and, if necessary, mass spectography. GC readouts can be extremely helpful for determining the likely therapeutic value of the oil. But in the final analysis, we should not lose sight of the fact that the final arbiter is the human nose.

Neroli, A Gift From the Angels

Neroli is by far and away, one of the most exquisite fragrances on the planet, at least in my world. Having been an aromatherapist in one form or another for almost 40 years, I have experienced a multitude of essential oils, and neroli is one of delicate, but intoxicating notes.

It is also one of the more expensive essential oils, and easy to understand when you consider the fact, that it takes two villages to create the heavenly aroma known as neroli. Neroli essential oil is traditionally distilled from the bitter orange trees, Citrus Aurantium, and entire towns come to hand-pick the small, white and very fragrant flowers that are then carefully steam distilled to produce the toxicsating nectar that is neroli.

Years ago I had the great fortune of studying with Valerie Ann Worwood, who in my humble opinion is one of the founders of our current body of knowledge about aromatherapy, having authored many books about aromatherapy and a respected doctor in Europe, she borne credibility to the world of essential oils.

Valerie said that neroli is truly the fragment of the angels, and not only because it grows so close to the sun, being the outermost expression of the orange tree, but the delicate aroma is one so close to the heart of the angels and the heavenly fragrance that one would smell an angel be standing nearby! I can personally attest to always knowing when there is an angel standing nearby, as the fragrance is unlike any other that begins to permeate my consciousness.

In addition to the heavenly aroma, neroli has many virtues in the world of skin care, being a wonderful ingredient in women's skin care creams, and for dealing with hormonal balancing, but the prominent quality in my world is its ability to dissipate depression. I have taught many workshops over the years, and worked with people in recovery as well as, the elderly who deal with depression on a daily basis. Neroli never fails to calm and relax everyone that inhales of the celestial aroma. I watch as smiles begin to form on those faces that have held sadness, depression and anxiety, and slowly the face of happiness and relaxation replace those old expressions.

Living in the Ojai Valley in California, we are blessed every springtime, as this is orange, lemon and grapefruit territory and the valley is filled with orchards, and about this time of year, the sun starts to warm the blossoms and the entire valley is filled with the fragrance of orange blossoms. Riding a bike through the valley is almost too intoxicating and it takes a great deal of concentration to be able to pedal as the aroma begins to permeate your being. Walking anywhere in the valley is an enticing experience in Spring.

So each year at this time, we enlist as many of the townspeople and harvest sweet orange blossoms, Citrus Sinensis, and then distill the fragrant white flowers to make one of the most amazing hydrosols ever! While we can never seem to get quite enough people solicited to make much oil, 1-4 ml. but the hydrosol is beyond incredible, and makes the most delicious beverage with a few drops in a glass of water. Of course, we only pick from organic trees, and I would never recommend taking hydrosols internally without you know with absolute certyty that they were cultured organically.

But the hydrosol is also a lovely way to fragrance a room, a freshly made bed, or to apply on the face or body. Spring has always been one of my favorite seasons, being an April baby, but now Spring has taken on a whole new relevance, as it is the time when neroli becomes the fragrance that permeates the warm Spring sun in our unique utopian valley! Soy is a soft wax, whereas beeswax is a bit firmer in composition. Oil of Peppermint

Researchers have found that breathing peppermint will help staying alert. For a little pick-me-up, or if you suffer from nausea, sprinkle two to three drops of oil of peppermint on a tissue. Place the tissue close to your nose and inhale the scent as needed.

Alternately buy a diffuser and peppermint-screened essential oil to help you stay alert at work. There are also diffusers that work in cars to help you stay alert during long drives.

Oil of Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus oil can be used to help eliminate bedbugs. Add two tablespoons of Eucalyptus oil to organic liquid soap, or regular detergent when washing clothes and linen.

Eucalyptus also has great healing powers. Eucalyptus oil has antibacterial and antiviral properties, which makes it a good ingredient for medicines treating respiratory problems.

Note: You should never consume Eucalyptus oil in large quantities because it can be toxic.

The Many Amazing Properties of Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree oil is well known to be a good natural antiseptic treatment. But did you know that is also an anti-fungal and an anti-biotic? Here is just a few of the many things that it can be used to treat:

Tonsillitis – I personally recovered from major Tonsillitis when I was stuck in the rainforest once – miles from a doctor. I had nothing but a bottle of Tea Tree oil and I made a full recovery. Before that I had been getting recurrent tonsillitis almost every year and always had to take antibiotics. After recovering without antibiotics though, and using only Tea tree mouthwash, I never got it again.

As you can see, tea tree is a bit of a wonder plant. I personally started using it for a mouthwash 2 years ago and since then very rarely get any mouth ulcers or tooth ache.

I'm not even trying to sell this stuff – I just really do believe in the power of it so much that I wanted to tell people about it.

Do be careful though as you should never swallow it and you should not really put it onto an open wound without diluted in a carrier oil. And also you need to be careful when making a mouthwash as the difference between 1 and 2 drops can be quite a shock! It does have a taste that takes getting used to. But after rinsing it out you do feel very fresh. When making mouthwash you can also add a drop of mint oil to make your mouth really fresh.

As an antibiotic it can effectively treat Impetigo. But be warned – unless you notice improvement within a week or if your condition get rapidly worried, you must go to a doctor immediately. Impetigo can very quickly get bad and cause your body to swell up. However if you catch it very early and rub Tea tree oil (diluted in a carrier oil) onto the infected area, it can heal within a few days.
