Variation of the Uses of Aromatherapy

Although the traditional uses of aromatherapy are for the bath and massage, there are many other helpful and effective ways of using and enjoying the benefits of essential oils. Some of these other ways are, Direct Application, Inhalation, Burners, Compresses, Atomizers, Vaporizing.

Using direct application of essential oils is not normally recommended, with the exception of lavender and tea tree oil. Just put a drop of either oil on a damp cotton bud and put onto the affected area.

With using aromatherapy through inhalation all you have to do is fill a glass bowl with hot to boiling water (do not spill it yourself) add about 4-8 drops of your essential oils that you have chosen for today, and with a towel over your head lean over and breathe deeply. Continue to breathe the vapors in for as long as the steam is still following.

There are many types of burners that you can purchase to attach to light globe fittings. All you do is add a few drops of essential oil and then the heat from the light bulb will heat the essential oils and vaporizes.

Compresses are used for the aid of many things. Fill a bowl with half a liter of hot or cold water depending on what you are using it for, Add 5-10 drops of your essential oils, and mix into the water. Add your cloth into the bowl and then wring out, and place on area you are treating. Use Hot Compress for arthritis, neuralgia, muscle aches, back pain, menstrual cramps and skin inflammation, and use cold water for Headaches, bruises, eye aches and tension. Keep using for around 20-30 minutes.

Using aromatherapy through Atomizers is one of my favorite, with this just get a glass or bottle, do not use plastic, add 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil to about 100mls of boiled or distilled water. This will put a lovely aroma through your home or help remove that stubbin smell and refresh that room.

Using aromatherapy through Vaporizer Burner's is quite simple. All you have to do is get an aromatherapy oil burner, fill the top with some water and add a few drops of essential oils and light the candle. But note, do not let all the water evaporate or the oils will leave a sticky residue in the bowl, and it is really hard to clean.

How to Cure Alzheimer’s Disease – Significant Benefits From Aromatherapy Natural Treatment

Are you sometimes exhausted caring for a patient suffering from Alzheimer's? In many cases, this patient is a beloved one, a close relative. You are not alone in such a situation! Progressively, people suffering from this form of dementia go through different stages: agitation, depression, aggression, hallucinations, sleep disturbance and wandering. A part of the conventional treatment consists to give drugs from the huge pharmaceutical family of the tranquilizers. But the side effects these drugs produce are quite often worse than their benefits. Is it possible to treat the patient with something natural and safe by means of an alternative medicine? Aromatherapy, a natural treatment by means of pure plant essential oils, will be able to improve my beloved one condition? Is it strong enough to have a positive effect on Alzheimer's sufferers?

Several studies show noteworthy benefits of aromatherapy on agitation in advanced Alzheimer's without any side effects. Aromatherapy produces its effects when its active compounds enter the body through the lungs or olfactory. Then, the active molecules are delivered to the brain via the bloodstream, where they elicit direct actions.

Lavender (lavandula angustifolia or Lavandula officinalis) and lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) are two essential oils of particular interest. For example, 2% lavender oil was given by daily inhalation to a patient suffering from Alzheimer's and the study showed significant improvements in agitation scores.

It is interesting to state that substances called terpines, which are present in essential oils, are absorbed through the lungs and find their way to the brain. These substances are reported to have cholinergic effects, like those of the cholinergic drugs effective in Alzheimer's such as donepezil, galantamine, and rivastigmine.

Aromatherapy with lemon balm essential oil may have a place as adjunctive therapy in patients with Alzheimer's. It is quite clear that this additional natural treatment has a significant effect to reduce the agitation and neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Conventional medicine is not able to cure Alzheimer's. Why? Because this category of medicine fights Alzheimer's through drugs that treat the symptoms of the disease, but does not deal with the root cause of the problem. Aromatherapy can help as adjunctive therapy, but does not even cure Alzheimer's patients. Does exit a way to cure naturally this form of dementia? The History of Organic Essential Oils

Ancient Egyptians believed bodies rubbed with Cedarwood Essential Oil would be preserved forever. They would also burn the wood as incense as an offering to the gods. Egyptians also used essential oils is baths and massages to increase the elasticity of the skin. This was a necessity due to the dry hot climate. Their skin would become dry and wrinkled without the use of essential oils.

In 500 BC China, the Philosopher “Confucius” sated “temples were hung with blossoms of magnolia, peach, jasmine and jonquil. This ritual was later adopted by Christians as part of regular prayer services.

Greeks and Romans were the first to start using essential oils outside of the religious activities. They used essential oils to perfume their bodies. Crusaders bought back many herbs and oils from various holy grounds back to their native countries.

The Queen of Sheeba is said to have trapped King Solomon using frankincense and myrrh essential oils. Frankincense and myrrh, if you recall, are two of the gifts the three kings brought to baby Jesus. These were considered of high value back then. It is also said that prayers mixed with incense smoke would mean the soul would go to heaven much quicker. The smoke that a priest waves over and around a coffin at a funeral is actually frankincense. Perhaps it was used because a common healing property of frankincense is that it is a sedative. So, it helps get the soul to heaven faster and it can actually calm the mourners.

The Romans used essential oils generously. They perfumed their bodies mostly because bathing was something that only happened once a week. It is even said that Romans put perfume on the sails of their ships!

During the middle ages, we know that plagues swept across Europe. Doctors and herbalists used rosemary, sage, peppermint, orange and cloves to prevent and cure these plagues. They often burned incense in the streets in the hope to prevent the spreading of the plague. It is often said that those who worked with the essential oils were never infected by the plagues.

Around the 1700's, the use and interest in essential oils began to decline. This was due to the fact that medical science developed. It was not until 1928 that aromatherapy was re-introduced and the interest in essential oils is growing at a very fast pace.

So you see, the use of essential oils dates very far back in history. I only wish that we did not get away from herbal cures!

Common Scents About Aromatherapy

If you have ever been treated to a massage with spotted oil, you may have been treated with aromatherapy, fragrant essential oils that come directly from plants and are used to promote well-being and healing. Advocates of aromatherapy market their products as being a helpful complementary treatment for chronic pain, stress, depression, anxiety and insomnia. Some essential oils have antibacterial effects when they are applied directly to your skin. Oils made with a chemical process are not considered true.

The treatment works because your nose is a sensational instrument. When aromas enter your nasal cavity the scent receptors in your nose send chemical messages directly to your brain at the limbic system. It is the limbic system that effects your heart rate, your blood pressure, respiration and many emotional responses.

Essential oils applied to the skin can also be absorbed into the blood stream. The rule of thumb is that if they are too concentrated to be applied directly to the skin they must be diluted.

The US does not regulate the use of the word aromatherapy on product packaging, labeling or in advertising so that just about any product can be listed as suitable. Some products on the market contain unnatural ingredients including fragrance oils and do not provide therapeutic benefits. Make sure you look at the label before purchasing.

When used as directed essential oils have few side effects. However, as with most of life, use aromatherapy in moderation.

Do not swallow essential oils; they can be toxic if taken by mouth.

Dilute the oils before you apply them to your skin. Some oils may cause irritation. If a rash takes place, discontinue use.

If you have asthma, talk to your doctor first. Some oils can trigger bronchial spasm.

How Can You Use Aromatherapy Personally to Improve Your Complexion?

Aromatherapy is like a multi-faceted diamond. Throughout the ages, it was one of the most predominant treatments used for common disorders and skin complaints. It has nonetheless played an important role in providing skincare to women of all times, especially in the creation of “magic” creams and lotions to maintain eternal youth.

Modern-day Skin Care
Most commercial products are based on a common basic formula which consist of mineral oil, chemically modified emulsifiers, stabilizers and scented with artificial fragrances. Behind attractive labels and packaging there is a semi natural product that works only on the surface of the skin providing no long term benefit, if any at all?

Products containing mineral oils are not absorbed by the lower layers of the skin to provide the necessary nourishment to newly emerging cells. Commercial toners contain alcohol has a drying effect and can irritate the skin.

Aromatherapy Skin Care
Research by the pioneer French aromatherapist Marguerite Maury whose findings sums up as follows: “Passionately interested by working with the essential oils, perfumes and aromatics we have discovered their vast possibilities-particularly with regard to the problem of regeneration.” Her research showed that skin rejuvenation occurs with the application of certain essential oils because of their ability to restore vitality to the tissues by regulating the capillaries.

The rejuvenating properties of certain oils such as frankincense, neroli, rose, myrrh and lavender have been confirmed in recent research. They have the ability to stimulate cellular granulation, the first stage of healing after an injury, by the same token they can maintain the youthfulness of the skin.

Essential oil blends are always diluted in natural vegetable base oils, creams, waxes and lotions. Products created with such ingredients are highly effective on the skin, because they penetrate the deeper dermal layers and rejuvenate the cell as they emerge, thus helping the skin to become youthful and radiant.

To achieve the result of a clear and smooth complexion, the complete beauty rule should be followed regularly using natural cleansers, toners, creams and lotions added with the selected essential oils for individual skin types.

The Miracle Cures of Natural Essential Oils

So, you may wonder how these natural oils perform the miracle miracle cures. Again, it may not be possible to get the precise and systematic explanation as to how they do the kind of remedy. Why? It is because it is a miracle and nobody could and would be able to explain how miracles work. But if you would take a little time reading the entire content of this article, you will find out the special procedure used together with these natural essential oils that give the miracle cure. So, the important thing here is to know what these components are and the special procedure.

Aromatherapy

This is a special kind of therapy that makes use of essential oils. These are being extracted from leaves, fruits, herbs and flowers. All come from nature, so, they are called natural essential oils, which are considered the basic elements for acquiring a healthy body. These ingredients will undergo a certain processes called distillation and steaming. The essence of the flowers is locked inside the liquid during the distillation process. These liquids are now the “essential oils”. But the thing about them is the fact that they are easily passed off by evaporation. That is why they are placed in a small glass bottle where they are concentrated.

Aromatherapy has been traditionally used in Egypt, Italy and Greece way back 6000 years. During those times, these natural extracts were discovered to possess special therapeutic elements. Each plant is characterized by its own healing qualities and a unique scent. These scents are known to be the miracle aroma. Once a person smells and inhales the aroma, the brain and the olfactory tracts are being stimulated. This is where a special type of healing took place. Once the person's memory and the brain's area of moods are stimulated, the endorphins and neurotransmitters are being released.

Once these essential extracts are released in the air, they create a fresh and relaxing atmosphere. You can diffuse them in several ways. This can be done through vaporizers, diffusers and oil burners. These are the best ways to release these therapeutic oils. Other option is to pour them in your bath water for you to have a fresh fragrant and healing bath.

Nowadays, people are using massage oils which are mixtures of pure organic and essential extracts. They were proven to work well in keeping the skin smoother and moisturized. Essential oils from chamomiles, oranges, jasmines, lavenders, and roses reduce dry patches and skin allergies. And you too, can try adding these plant oils into your face packs for you to see the difference in your skin.

It is necessary to dilute essential oils with other liquids due to the fact that they are too concentrated. Common causes of highly concentrated essential oils are burning sensations and itching. So, better be careful too. Yet still, essential extracts are proven to be more beneficial in many areas. They are effectively used in controlling blood pressure, curing insomnia, aches and injuries, and essential for pain management. Essential oils are commonly used as massage liquids both for stress release and therapies.

Other good thing about organic essential oils is the fact that they do not contain chemicals or any synthetic substances. Duely, because of its being pure, it tends to be more expensive. Nowadays, more and more skin care products whether the therapeutic or cosmetic have natural liquids added for better absorption. But beware of imitations. They may not be safe for your skin because they are added with synthetic fragrances and other substances. What you need to do is carefully check the labels and be sure to see organic oils in the ingredients.

So, how did miracle cures happen? That is when these natural essential oils are extracted from nature, accordingly processed and used in a therapy called aromatherapy. Imagine how this natural aroma does to your body. Wonderful is not it? That is the miracle cure of natural essential oils.

Aromatherapy Defined – What is Aromatherapy?

The most common interpretation of the word “Aromatherapy” would be to define it as therapy which uses aroma or scent.

While this seems to be the main philosophy, in reality, it is not simply the aroma, or psychological effect of the aroma, but also the pharmacological and physiological effects that only the pure Essential Oil can induce within the body systems that makes it therapeutic.

Many products are sold today as “aromatherapy” when in reality they are just products with fragrance added to enhance the senses.

Fragrance oils are synthetic and have no therapeutic value although their odor can affect the emotions through olfaction.

Essential Oils on the other hand affect not only the senses but also the body system as a whole bringing balance and harmony to the body through various applications of the oil.

Pure Essential Oils are the pure, unadulterated oil that is extracted from the plant, tree, roots, stem, etc. of the living plant through various methods of distillation.

Essential Oils are the life “essence” of the plant and therefore have the natural, healing properties contained within them.

These volatile, concentrated essences are contained in the glands, glandular hairs, sacs or veins of the different plant parts. They contain hundreds of organic constituents, including hormones, vitamins, and other natural elements which are produced in the chloroplasts of the leaves (the place where light and matter are combined through photosynthesis.) Plant sugars help to move the chloroplast to different parts of the plant. These oils help to attract or repel insects etc and their antiseptic properties guard them against fungi and bacteria.

Essential Oils are phytochemicals with specific biological properties such as anti-inflammatories, pain relievers, etc. Essential Oils are used for various purposes. They can eliminate or sedate, relieve anxiety and stress, boost the immune system, relax muscles, stimulate circulation etc. They have antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic properties that aid in the healing process but are less toxic than synthetic antibiotics.

The purpose of aromatherapy is to enhance, restore and heal the body on all levels, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Health can be defined as having all body systems in balance. Diseases occurs when the body stops functioning in a balanced way.

Aromatherapy helps to strengthen the body systems and assists in the self-healing process bringing the body back into balance or harmony.

There are many websites on the Internet that talk about Aromatherapy and how to use aromatherapy but many of them can be misleading, or in some cases downright dangerous. There are some people who will even advise using essential oils directly on the skin without diluting it first in a suitable carrier oil. This can be extremely dangerous and cause toxicity to enter the body and lead to sensitization.

The best way to learn about what aromatherapy is, is to take a good aromatherapy course that will teach you how to use aromatherapy treatments safely and effectively. Aromatherapy Courses can really vary in price so be sure to find one that is affordable and informative. Check out the syllabus of any of the aromatherapy courses you are thinking of taking before making your final decision.

Although the Internet is called the “Information Highway” it is sadly riddled with misinformation. This is why we need guidance to be able to sort the chaff from the wheat.

So What Exactly is Aromatherapy?

Modern day aromatherapy falls under the umbrella of holistic therapies which include treatments by herbal medicine and homeopathy amongstst others. Common beliefs about aromatherapy are that it is no more than a relaxing massage with the use of essential oils.

Essential oil has been used throughout history for many different purposes, from religious to medicinal as well as healing of the spirit. In Egyptian times, plant derived resins and perfumed oil were necessary ingredients in the preparations of funerals. Scents were very much an integral part of the pleasures of the Egyptian lifestyle. The Greeks injected distillation – extracting oils from plants through steaming processes- a method broadly in use today, which preserves both the fragrance and healing property of the essences. The Romans adopted much of the Greeks medical knowledge, but played a great role in improving the way aroma was used for pleasures and relaxation. By 3 AD Rome was the bathing capital of the world with one thousand public bathing spots where bathtubs were massed with spotted oils.
The Arabs who perfected the distillation process created potent essences and exotic perfumes, still in use in Mosque and religious ceremonies.

Essential oils have such powers that in medieval times they were used to create lethal poisons by those involved in Machiavellian plots. Here, it shows the necessity of consulting a qualified aromatherapist when creating blends for healing purposes.

One of their main uses have been for fighting infections, and formulated into concoctions that were rubbed over the body to keep sickness at bay. Although plants and herbs have always been used by natives to alleviate pain, combat digestive problems, sometimes even more serious health problems like cancer, it is only in the mid-nineteenth century that the exact scientific effect of essential oils in the fight against bacteria came to be known through research and documented investigations.

A 1992 issue of the “British journal of Occupational Therapy” writes about how the practices of aromatherapy such as massage, inhalation, lotions, creams, compresses, inhalation and baths can improve quality of life for patients in hospitals, improve health and promote well- being. Amongst the list of benefits of aromatherapy listed in the journal are:

1. The reduction of stress.
2. Relief of depression.
3. Promoting activity of alertness
4. Stimulating of sensory awareness.
5. Treating various medical problems.
6. Providing pain relief.

Another area where essential oils have proved to be extremely beneficial is in the creation of skin-care and hair-care products. Again, through history, aromatherapy has played an important part in the making of exotic creams, lotions and hair washes to enhance the beauty regime of the most beautiful women in the world. It is now known through the formulas that have been passed down that their secret ingredients were essential oils.

Natural Aromatherapy Oil Blends

Since essential oils used in aromatherapy are distilled from plants they are inherently natural. But because essential oils can cause severe irritation and reactions from some people they are usually diluted by blending with a carrier oil. As a rule essential oils should always be blended with a carrier oil.

Carrier oils, also called base oils, should also be natural vegetable oils although sometimes vegetable butters are used. (A Butter will be solid or semi-solid at room temperature while an oil will be liquid.) The use of mineral and animal oils such as fish oil are generally not used in aromatherapy practices.

Carrier oils will each have their own different properties, and aromas, although these will be much milder. They can however in some circumstance enhance and / or counter the undesired odors and their effects, so it's wise to experiment and read broadly when concocting your own natural aromatherapy oil blends.

Grape seed and sweet almond oil are among the most popular carrier oils. When shopping for carrier oils, look for oils that have been cold pressed. This is a more expensive process in that it requires additional cooling to counteract the natural heat produced from the

mechanical pressing process. Heat can destroy nutrients within the oil, and while the primary benefit of aromatherapy comes from the essential oils, there is no reason to not benefit from the carrier oils as well. Particularly, when massage is being used to apply to oil directly to the skin. Some carriers are rich in Vitamin E, others have beta carotene which can be absorbed into the skin along with the essential oils.

While those with vitamin E have relatively long shelf lives, other carrier oils will have more Omega 3 fats, which while also good for the skin tend to make the oil more vulnerable to going rancid. As a result, carrier oils typically are purchased in smaller quantities to insure they are used up and not allowed to spoil.

Essential oils also tend to lose their effectiveness quickly, although in their case it is due to their volatility and rather than going rancid they lose their power via oxidation.

There are over 500 different essential oils. These each have their own characteristics and when combined with each other and different carrier oils the number of potential combinations are immense. This is where the art of aromatherapy comes into play.

Many different vendors have produced a plethora of natural aromatherapy oil blends to achieve different therapeutic, skin care and natural perfumes.

For example one blend of oils combines Ravensara, Lemon, peperment, eucapyptus, and wintergreen to create a wonderful blend that will help open clogged airways to help a cold sufferer regain optimum breathing conditions.

Another combination of black spruce needle, cedarwood and Madgascar pice is effectively used as a back massage to fight fatigue and generate a sense of energy.

A skin care blend of Thyme, Lavender, Rosemary Verbenone and Neroli oil is used to reduce fine lines, and nourish skin.

These are but three natural aromatherapy oil blends available in the marketplace. Hundreds more are available for those who wish to seek out natural alternatives to meet life's little ailments in a natural manner.
