Essential Oils Treatment – How to Treat Scarring and Skin Conditions With Essential Oils

Topical Use of Essential Oils Treatment – Essential oils treatment is usually called aroma therapy because fragrance is the primary therapeutic stimulus of the oils (via the limbic and neuroendocrine systems). In aroma therapy topical application of the oils is regarded as the less effective way to use them and some oils, such as Cinnamon oil, are actually highly irritating to the skin.

Essential Oils Treatment For Scars – Scarring is a situation when application of the oil on the skin can be appropriate. Just remember to only use oils that are appropriate and soothing for the skin and which will not cause irritation.

Internal Essential Oils Treatment – The oils may be taken internally by putting a maximum of 2 to 3 drops in a gel cap and then topping it up with olive oil. Seal the cap and shake it vigorously before swallowing. Take one cap a day and store pre-made caps in the freezer for future use.

Olfactory Essential Oils Treatment – The fragrance of the oil applied to the skin provides an additional benefit but the ultimate way to get the aromatic effect is to also inhale the aroma of the oils through your nose by sniffing the atomized oil from a small electrically powered nebulizer. If going this route it's best to give yourself “aroma therapy” sessions by sitting in front of the nebulizer for 20 minutes two to three times a day to inhale the aroma. Alternately, you can sniff the fragrance from a cotton ball that has a drop of the oil on it and is stored in a zip lock bag between uses. A drop of the oil rubbed into the palms of your hands and inhaled from your cupped palms can also be effective.

Sniffing from an open bottle of oil is not really going to work because the essential oil has to be exposed to the air in order to fully release all of its volatile components.

The aromatherapy is especially pleasant after a hard day's work at the office. Just a few drops will soothe your mind and help you relax for a good night's sleep. It is an extremely powerful oil that will cure you from aches and pains associated with work.


Rosemary is a good follow up essential oil to the others that relieve your stress and aches and pains. Although it is a stimulating essential oil, it is also a the way way to clear your head and help you relax for a better night's sleep. Rosemary is also said to help your short and long term memory helping you concentrate and focus on important work.

Use the above essential oils separately or in combination for an effective way to relieve yourself from mental fatigue. Just a few drops burned during the day will improve your mental health almost immediately.

Using Essential Oils Safely Overview

Essential oils are a great way to take care of yourself naturally but they do need to be used correctly to prevent from causing any damage. I'm not trying to scare you away from using them just want you to understand that if not used correctly they can cause you great harm. When they are used correctly they help many different conditions naturally. Here is a list of general safety guidelines:

-Never apply them directly to the skin without diluting it in a base oil first. The only ones that are safe to apply neat to the skin are lavender and tea tree.

-Make sure that you research any oil before you use it. Some may not be safe to use because of health conditions that you may have. For example if you have high blood pressure you need to avoid using rosemary essential oil.

-Do not use internationally. Some are toxic if taken internally.

-Patch test any oil before you use it. This can be done simply by placing a drop of oil in a few drops of base oil and applying to the wrist and leaving there for a few hours. If irritation occurs rinse the area well with milk or water. With any mild irritation you may be able to still use the oil as long as it is well diluted and if the irritation is more than mild you may want to avoid using the essential oil all together.

-Some oils need to be used in moderation to prevent toxic levels from building up in the body. Some oils take longer to go through the body and some of these essential oils can become toxic if too much builds but in the body. In researching oil you will know if the essential oil needs to be used in moderation.

-Some oils by cause phototoxicity, which may cause your skin to become more sensitive to sunlight or tanning beds. Many citrus oils can cause this to happen, so use caution applying these oils right before exposure to sunlight or tanning beds.

-Use extreme caution when using essential oils on babies and children. On babies under a year only a few oils are safe to use, lavender and roman chamomile are two of them. For infants up to the age of five make sure the oils are well diluted, use only about a quarter of what you would for yourself. The easiest way to do this is to use four times the normal amount of base oil. For children 6 to 12 dilute the oil in twice the normal amount of base oil.

-During pregnancy dilute the oil in twice the normal amount of base oil. There are also some oils that should be avoided completely during pregnancy and others should be avoided at certain times. In researching the oils you will know if they are safe to use during pregnancy.

-Not all oils can be used with homeopathic treatments because they reduce the effectiveness of the homeopathic remedy.

-Always store essential oils in a cool, dark, dry area in well sealed bottles, since they are very volatile and will lose their effectiveness if not stored properly.

These are just the basic safety guidelines for using essential oils, some essential oils themselves may have safety guidelines that should be followed. You will know what these guidelines are once you have researched the essential oil.

What is Aromatherapy Overview

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes. From there, essential oils are an aromatic and volatile liquid or at times a semi-solid that contains the plants odorous properties. They are natures own perfume and many give a plant its scent. Many of us know what a rose smells like, the smell of fresh cut rosemary or peel an orange and indulge in the scent; All of these scents are the essential oil of the plant that you smell.

Many of us at some point have used a product that stated it was an aromatherapy product such as lotions, bath products and candles. Many of us believe the labels stating that they are aromatherapy products not knowing that they might not be true aromatherapy products. But after checking many of the labels myself I've found that they are not true aromatherapy products, they use fragrance oils not essential oils. There are some products out there that do use essential oils but are very outnumbered by ones that do not. Many of us including myself have used products that claim they are aromatherapy but use fragrance oils. They claim to do things for you like calm and relax you and even though the scent may be calming and relaxing in itself. The only way to know if the products contain essential oils is to check the label and look for the scientific or standard name of the essential oil.

Aromatherapy is a great alternative to help many conditions, which will be gone into more depth in later articles, because of the different properties of the essential oils used. Many people are finding a natural approach to taking care of themselves through the use of aromatherapy. There are many ways to do this, seeing an aromatherapists who will mix specialized blends for you, there is a multitude of books that have blends to use and many health stores carry oils and can give you some basic guidelines in using the oils or simply by buying products that contain essential oils.
