Becoming a Certified Aromatherapist – 5 Great Reasons to Add This to a Healing Practice

Why become a certified aromatherapist-isn't reading about essential oils enough education on the subject? I guess I could also ask if reading about plumbing is enough to become a plumber or reading about healthcare is sufficient to become a doctor or a nurse. Since aromatherapy came to the United States in the 1980's great strides have been made is essential oil education. It is not enough to know that essential oils have a long aromatic history that dates back at least 10,000 years. It is not enough to know that an essential oil is made up of hundreds, and sometimes thousands of different chemical components that have unique actions on the human body, emotions and spirit. It is not enough to know there are many different ways and methods of applying to get the oils into the body and that the methods will be related to the chemistry and vibrational frequencies of the individual oils.

Here are five great reasons to add aromatherapy to your healing practice

First, whether you are a nurse, doctor, therapist, or energy healer, the essential oils simply make whatever you are doing-work better. Why? It's about vibrational frequency. Everything living vibrates because the atoms are vibrating, the molecules are vibrating, the cells are vibrating, in short-everything is moving. When there is a state of health-we say the person is in harmony-everything is “singing” in balance. When there is disease or illness-something is out of balance-there is dis-harmony among the cells, tissues, organs of the body. Essential oils are living substances that carry a particular vibrational frequency which can assist whatever else you are offering the client for his / her health.

Second, knowing the chemistry of essential oils will give you a leg up on how nature works. Essential oils are made up of hydrocarbons like monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, oxygenated compounds like alcohols, phenols, esters, aldehydes, oxides, and many more. These compounds fall into categories with unique healing properties that do not cause side effects like man-made pharmaceuticals which are inert-non-living substances.

Third, knowing the actions of essential oils will enable you to better advise your clients on nature's natural medicines. You can offer personal testimonies or look up the information to better enable the client to make their own choice for health.

Fourth, essential oils can improve your health and help you as a healing practitioner to be a model of health for others. As you start to appropriately use essential oils for your own health, you will find you get sick less often, have more energy and even think more clearly. I guarantee you, your clients will notice the gradual changes and want to know what you are doing to improve your own health.

Fifth, becoming a certified aromatherapist gives you another credential showing that you have completed a rigorous course of study. Your clients deserve to know that you have spent time learning your craft whether it is in nursing, massage therapy, medicine, or energy healing. Integrating more than one modality will prepare you to address your client needs holistically.

Aromatherapy Diffusers and Candles

Diffusers are used in conjunction with essential oils. They work to disperse the oils in the air so that they can be breathed in and enjoyed by everyone in the room. There are a number of different styles, some use power and a fan and while others use small amounts of heat to disperse the aroma. The primary types of diffusers are atomizers, fan diffusers, tea light diffusers, electric oil warmers, the scent ball, terra cotta disks.

An atomizer consist of a pump and glass. These disperse the essential oils into a very fine mist and then disperse them. It is important that they are not left on too long. It only requires just a few minutes and then you'll be able to smell the scent perfectly. If you let this type of diffuser stay on longer than that, then you can get too much essential oil into the air and this can cause problems.

A fan diffuser uses a fan to dispense the essential oil molecules in the air. These are good if you have children. They will not be in danger of being burned like they might with heated diffusers.

A personal nasal inhaler is a type of diffuser. It is used for personal use, hence the name. If there are other people in the room who would rather not smell the oil, this is a great way to enjoy the scents without offending anyone else.

Tea light diffusers use the heat from a tea light candle. They are very easy to use and are generally used by beginners. You will generally get about 2-3 hours from this type of diffuser.

An electric bowl warmer diffuser consistants of primarily a bowl. You will need to add your essential oil and water and the diffuser will heat the mixture up. You should get a couple of hours out of this type of diffuser as well.

The scent ball is another really good diffuser. What is great about these is that you will be able to take them with you. If you change rooms and you still want to enjoy your scent, you can. You will also be able to change out your scent pad so that you can exchange it for another if you'd like. These also use a low source of heat to diffuse the scent. They are extremely cheap so you can purchase more then one.

Ceramic shells last a little longer then the diffusers listed above. They may actually keep the scent in a small area for about a day.

Beside essential oils, another great way to scented a room is with candles. Aromatherapy candles smell absolutely wonderful and can help calm the nerves and emotions. After a long, hard day, relaxing with a wonderful aromatherapy fragrant candle can take the edge off and help you relax. There is a large array of these types of candles. You can find one in just about every scent. You can purchase them online or make them yourself in your favorite scents and colors.

Using Aromatherapy Essential Oils to Lower Blood Pressure

Ask anyone with high blood pressure what contributor to their condition and they'll say undutely: stress. If they have an argument with a loved one, their blood pressure goes up. If the boss makes them redo a work project, their blood pressure goes up. If they think about something that angers them, their blood pressure goes up.

Stress increases the blood pressure by constricting the blood vessels. When the blood vessels are constricted, then they're essentially squeezed, and the pressure inside them increases. Because of the direct impact of stress on the blood vessels, scientists and doctors now know that if the person with high blood pressure is relaxed, then the blood pressure will drop.

And it's the physiological principle that excites massage therapists and those who use essential oils in aromatherapy. Using the principle correctly can lower blood pressure. Essential oils come from plants and because there are so many different plants in the world, there are also many different essential oils that can be used.

Some of the essential oils used for relaxing the body include lemon balm and rose. These essential oils can be combined together and added to the aromatherapy diffuser. About 5 to 8 drops are used. Other essential oils are lavendar, chamomile, marjoram, clary sage, hibiscus and rosewood. The aromatherapy diffuser then breaks the essential oil apart, and disperses the water / essential oil combination into the atmosphere. The human nose picks up the scent, takes it to the area of the brain that controls blood pressure and acts on the smooth muscles of the blood vessels, relaxing them.

That's how aromatherapy and essential oils can be used to lower blood pressure. Aromatherapy is a great natural stress-reduction method that can assist in blood pressure regulation.

So You Want to Become an Aromatherapist!

So you want to become an aromatherapist but you are not quite sure how to go about it. If you take an aromatherapy course, which one should you take? Do you need to take an aromatherapy course to become an aromatherapist or can you do it by self-study alone? These questions are addressed and answered in the following paragraphs for you.

In this day and age with so much worry about the recession and the cost of medical care many people are turning to alternative health to try and minimize their costs. Not only is aromatherapy less cost it is also a much more healthy alternative.

Many people are interested in aromatherapy and may consider becoming an aromatherapist but they are unsure of where to start. There is so much information on the Internet regarding aromatherapy and aromatherapy courses it can be a bit daunting trying to separate the chaff from the wheat. There is a lot of information but much of what you read on some of the sites can be downright dangerous.

The best way to be sure you are getting the proper information is to take a good aromatherapy course. There are many courses available on the Internet but not all may suit your needs. Here are a few suggestions on what to do if you wish to become an aromatherapist.

If you are planning on becoming an aromatherapist then you will find that you need more than a basic course or aromatherapy guide. You will need to learn not only about aromatherapy in general but also how to practice it in a safe and effective way.

Although many of the aromatherapy courses on the Internet are quite expensive you can find a few affordable ones that will not break your pocket book. The main thing is to find a course that will allow you to become certified as an aromatherapist.

Although certification in aromatherapy is not recognized by the government it is still advisable to become certified if you wish to practice aromatherapy and suggest treatments for your future clients.

Think about it. If you were to go to someone for advice on how to use aromatherapy effectively you would trust someone who has just read books about it, or someone who actually has a certificate stating that they are certified in aromatherapy. Certification just means that you have taken a proper aromatherapy course and have received a certificate showing that you have successfully completed the said course. There are certain standards set up by the various aromatherapy associations which will tell you what you should be looking for in a good course.

There are two distinct levels in aromatherapy certification. Level I deals mostly with the basic aromatherapy history and blending of essential oils. The Level II course will teach you anatomy and physiology and the therapeutic blending of essential oils. You will also learn how to decide on which essential oils are the best to use for a particular situation. You will have the training necessary to make safe judgments on which essential oils are most suitable for the situation at hand.

Make sure that you take a good look at the aromatherapy course syllabus to find out exactly what you will be learning. You will want to make sure that you can get both the Level I and Level II course from the same place. It is usually impossible to take someone's level II course if you have not taken their Level I course. The reason being that not all courses are created equal. What one person may teach in their Level I course may be only a fraction of what another teacher is teaching.

Always check the curriculum and do not be afraid to ask questions of the person giving the course. Most of us are usually very helpful in giving you further information if you need it. Becoming a certified aromatherapist can be a great avenue for you to practice healthy choices when it comes to you and your family and friends health.

Essential Oils Treatment – How to Treat Scarring and Skin Conditions With Essential Oils

Topical Use of Essential Oils Treatment – Essential oils treatment is usually called aroma therapy because fragrance is the primary therapeutic stimulus of the oils (via the limbic and neuroendocrine systems). In aroma therapy topical application of the oils is regarded as the less effective way to use them and some oils, such as Cinnamon oil, are actually highly irritating to the skin.

Essential Oils Treatment For Scars – Scarring is a situation when application of the oil on the skin can be appropriate. Most of the oils are safe for topical application but those that are potential skin irritants should be diluted in a neutral vegetable oil like apricot, grapeseed, or sweet almond oil before being applied topically.

You can prepare a liniment for massaging into the skin by thoroughly mixing 10 – 20 drops of the essential oil with 10 ml of the vegetable “carrier” oil.

NB It is very important that the treatment of post surgical scar tissue only will be done after the incision has completely healed. You must ask your doctor to tell you when it is safe to apply the oils to the skin around the surgery site.

Before an incision has completely healed, and the post surgical scar tissue has formed, the fragrance can be inhaled or the oil can be taken internally. (See below.)

Other Skin Conditions – Essential oils treatment can also be used for other skin conditions such as oily skin, “mature” skin with wrinkles, damaged and discolored skin, and any tissue trauma such as bruising or burns. Just remember to only use oils that are appropriate and soothing for the skin and which will not cause irritation.

Internal Essential Oils Treatment – The oils may be taken internally by putting a maximum of 2 to 3 drops in a gel cap and then topping it up with olive oil. Seal the cap and shake it vigorously before swallowing. Take one cap a day and store pre-made caps in the freezer for future use.

Olfactory Essential Oils Treatment – The fragrance of the oil applied to the skin provides an additional benefit but the ultimate way to get the aromatic effect is to also inhale the aroma of the oils through your nose by sniffing the atomized oil from a small electrically powered nebulizer. If going this route it's best to give yourself “aroma therapy” sessions by sitting in front of the nebulizer for 20 minutes two to three times a day to inhale the aroma. Alternately, you can sniff the fragrance from a cotton ball that has a drop of the oil on it and is stored in a zip lock bag between uses. A drop of the oil rubbed into the palms of your hands and inhaled from your cupped palms can also be effective.

Sniffing from an open bottle of oil is not really going to work because the essential oil has to be exposed to the air in order to fully release all of its volatile components.

What is Aromatherapy Overview

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes. From there, essential oils are an aromatic and volatile liquid or at times a semi-solid that contains the plants odorous properties. They are natures own perfume and many give a plant its scent. Many of us know what a rose smells like, the smell of fresh cut rosemary or peel an orange and indulge in the scent; All of these scents are the essential oil of the plant that you smell.

Many of us at some point have used a product that stated it was an aromatherapy product such as lotions, bath products and candles. Many of us believe the labels stating that they are aromatherapy products not knowing that they might not be true aromatherapy products. But after checking many of the labels myself I've found that they are not true aromatherapy products, they use fragrance oils not essential oils. There are some products out there that do use essential oils but are very outnumbered by ones that do not. Many of us including myself have used products that claim they are aromatherapy but use fragrance oils. They claim to do things for you like calm and relax you and even though the scent may be calming and relaxing in itself. The only way to know if the products contain essential oils is to check the label and look for the scientific or standard name of the essential oil.

Aromatherapy is a great alternative to help many conditions, which will be gone into more depth in later articles, because of the different properties of the essential oils used. Many people are finding a natural approach to taking care of themselves through the use of aromatherapy. There are many ways to do this, seeing an aromatherapists who will mix specialized blends for you, there is a multitude of books that have blends to use and many health stores carry oils and can give you some basic guidelines in using the oils or simply by buying products that contain essential oils.
