Essential Oils – Healing Broken Bones is Not That Hard With the Right Healing Oils

Recently I slipped on ice and broke my arm. Luckily the bones were not displaced-a simple fraction of the head of the radius bone as shown on x-ray. What is significant is that the pain was greatly lessened by applying certain essential oils that are anti-inflammatory and pain relieving. Can essential oils help the healing process? In my case, absolutely! When bones are fractured, there may be swelling, internal bleeding into the area, nerve and even tendon damage. Applying ice and in my case splinting my arm to immobilize it greatly reduced the pain. Here are the essential oils that I used to get back full use of my arm in half the time someone of my age would take.

Helichrysum italicum also called Everlasting, was the first oil I used for pain and swelling. This is an outstanding oil that has several great medical properties. It is known as an anticoagulant, anesthetic, antispasmodic, antiviral, a liver protectant, detoxifier and stimulant, chelates chemicals and toxins, and helps to regenerate nerves.

Next I applied lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) for its anti-inflammatory action and its ability to regenerate connective tissues and ligaments. Lemongrass also dilates blood vessels, improves circulation, and promotes lymph flow. Lemongrass can be a little warm to the skin because of its high aldehyde content, so the third oil I chose was high in monoterpenes which served to quench the warmth.

Idaho balsam fir (Abies balsamae) is 98% monoterpenes making it an outstanding anti-inflammatory oil. It also has anticoagulant properties and is known as a great oil for arthritis / rheumatism, lumbago and sciatica. Plus the smell of balsam fir is that of Christmas trees-very refreshing and an improvement over the heavy lemongrass fragrance and “weed” smell of helichrysum.

The fourth oil I used was a blend called Trauma Life. It is a blend of valerian, lavender, frankincense, sandalwood, rose, helichrysum, spruce, geranium, davana and citrus hystrix. This particular blend helps to release buried emotional trauma from, in my case, the accident, but it also helps release emotional trauma from the death of loved ones, assault or abuse. It combats stress and uproots traumas that cause insomnia, anger, restlessness, and a weakened immune response. The valerian component of this oil certainly helped me to rest better since getting my arm in a comfortable position was a bit of a feat.

Many other essential oils have been found to be helpful in bone healing including wintergreen, peppermint, spruce, pine, ginger and vetiver. The key is finding out which oils are going to be most helpful for you. I found a formula that worked for me.

Essential Oils and Hydrosols

The use of essential oils in the United States over the last 20 years has soared. Fragrance use in general has increased to the point that it is impossible to spend a day without the introduction of some added scent without one is in the woods away from civilization.

Essential Oils can be produced with steam distillation, solvents, or pressed. Citrus oils are generally “cold pressed” from the peels, while oils that involve roots, resins and plants that have less oil are sometimes expressed with solvents.

Essential oils are extremely concentrated. A gallon of peppermint leaves, well packed, will yield 10 or 15 drops of oil. Consider the strength of a cup of peppermint tea that only uses a teaspoon of the herb. That should give you some idea of ​​the concentration of a single drop of oil. At one time it was considered safe to use lavender, tea tree, patchouli and a few other essential oils neat (undiluted). Now we consider it to be unsafe to use ANY essential oil neat, as over time sensitization occurs. The concentration of these materials must be respected.

Hydrosols are the re-liquefied steam that results from the distillation of plants. They contain minuscule droplets of oil suspended in water. Because of the concentration of pure essential oils, some of the hydrosols are gaining popularity for use where water is acceptable – in hydrous applications. They can be used for cooking (rosewater and orange blossom water are examples), for external applications (witch hazel is a hydrosol), and for various uses in cosmetics and toiletries.

Some useful essential oils:

Lavender – The oil of lavender thought about the birth of Aromatherapy, when (as the story goes) chemist Renee Gottefosse burned his arm in the lab, and plunged the burn into the near liquid – a beaker of lavender oil. He discovered that it caused the pain to cease immediately, and there was no blistering or scarring. This oil does indeed work well on burns. It is also a relaxing oil, flipping switches in the limbic brain, and helping some to release anxiety and stress.

Tea Tree Oil – Called “First Aid in a Bottle”, entire industries have been built on this oil. Said to be antiseptic, anti-viral, and anti-fungal, some even claim that it works on warts and skin tags with regular application. A little in a toothpaste is amazing!

Patchouli – An earthy scent that people either love or hate – few in betweens. It is sometimes worn as a bug repellant, and is a moth repellant in the closet. It is good for the skin, especially mature skin.

Eucalyptus – Clears sinuses and sinus headaches. Also can be used in a house full of sick people to clear the air and get rid of germs.

Bergamot – This essential oil is the distinct scent and flavor used in classic Earl Gray tea. Said to be an anti-depressant when diffused.

Peppermint – Energizing scent, the oil is used in teas, foods, candy, and medicines. Cooling to the skin when added to creams and lotions, peppermint is also soothing to upset stomachs, although extreme caution should be used when using essential oils internally.

Rosemary – Being studied seriously for its possible use with Alzheimer's patients, this oil is also energizing. Said to help with memory. Great for scalps that need circulation.

Chamomile – German and Roman varieties have different qualities, but both are very relaxing. They smell something like apples. German is blue, Roman is light yellow. Both are very healing on skin problems, rashes in particular. Extremely expensive.

Lemon Balm – Another oil that is incredibly expensive. A container with approx. 20 drops can cost upwards of $ 20. This oil is useful for any skin complaint, soothing the problem area, but it is especially excellent for any of the Herpes Simplex viral outbreaks, such as cold sores, shingles, chicken pox, and genital herpes.

Sages – The garden sage yields an oil that is drying, so it can be valuable for any wiping condition, or acne. Clary sage is called a “woman's oil” helping to bring about hormonal balance.

Some essential oils can be useful in diffusers – removing germs from homes or workspaces, some for emotional issues like grief or sadness, and others uplift or soothe.


Because the hydrosols are not so concentrated, yet still contain minute droplets of the essential oil, they are becoming more popular. There is less chance of becoming sensitized to the components of the oil, as some do from overuse. They are much stronger than a tea or infusion, but much more dilute than essential oils.

They have similar applications, but can be used straight without needing to be diluted with a carrier oil or liquid. They are also sometimes called “distillates”, “hydrolates” and “floral waters”.

There has not been much research or writing done on hydrosols at this point, as they have always been considered a by-product of the production of essential oils. They are revolutionizing the face of aromatherapy right now.

Some useful hydrosols:

Lemon Verbena – Revitalizing, crisp lemon flavor and scent. Good used as a toner, particularly on acne. Delicious in tea.

Peppermint – Calms the tummy, soothes itching. Uplifting and Invigorating. Refreshing green scent.

Cucumber – Anti-inflammatory with astringent properties.

Sage – Deodorizing, cleansing astringent.

Rose – Good for all skin types. Used in cooking

Comfrey – Incredibly healing to skin. Sunburn soother

Lemon Balm – Anti-depressant, anti-viral, calming and de-stressing.

St. John's Wort – Nerve support and anti-depressant.

Jewelweed – excellent for rashes caused by other plants like poison ivy, etc.

Helichrysum – Great for bruising. Remarkably healing and said to treat pain. Used internally and externally for pain and bruising.

Vitex – Well known women's herb, used for PMS and menopausal symptoms. Balancing.

Chamomile – Good for skin and used internally for relaxation.

Lavender – Contains all of the properties of the essential oil.

Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances that come to us from the plant world; specifically from the leaves, flowers, roots and fruits of aromatic plants. The amount of plant material it takes to produce an oil varies, but to give a rather dramatic example, 1000 pounds or 3.6 million jasmine flowers are needed to create one pound of Jasmine oil. And rose oil is even more concentrated, requiring over 10,000 pounds of rose petals to produce one pound of Rose oil! These two examples illustrate both why these oils can be expensive, and why, due to their concentrated nature, it's so important to use them with knowledge and care.

Dilute Before Using

Always dilute essential oils before applying to the skin, as applying them 'neat', (in their pure form), can cause skin irritation, rashes, and allergic reactions. Lavender and tea tree oils are often cited as being exceptions to this rule, but in most situations, diluting these oils is still the preferred method. A general rule of thumb is to add one drop of essential oil per teaspoon of high quality, cold pressed vegetable oil, such as sweet almond or grape seed oil. If you want to create an aromatherapy bath, add two to four drops to a warm (not hot) bath. If blending several oils together, treat the blend as a single oil; in other words, use no more than four drops of the blend in a bath, or one drop of the blend to a teaspoon of vegetable oil.

Patch Test

When trying out a new aromatherapy oil, it's a good idea to do a patch test first, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies. Mix one drop of the oil you're testing into a teaspoon of base oil and dab a tiny amount on the inside of the arm or wrist area. Wait 24 hours to ensure no redness or irritation occurs.

Quality Matters

It's important to buy high quality oils, and not confuse essential oils with fragrance oils, which are synthetic, not natural products. Some products sold as pure oils are diluted in cheaper carrier oils or are adulterated in some other way. Again, read product labels carefully but be aware that labels may not disclose full information. Become familiar with the botanical names of the oils you want to use and never purchase an oil that is not labeled with the botanical name, as well as the common name.

Some Cautions

  • If you are pregnant or nursing, consult with your doctor before using aromatherapy.
  • Keep aromatherapy products out of reach of children and pets.
  • Keep essential oils away from your eyes and mucus membranes.
  • Be careful around furniture, as undiluted oils can damage varnished surfaces.
  • Citrus oils, such as lemon, tangerine, orange, bergamot and grapefruit are photosensitizing – which means they can induce sunburn. Do not use these oils before exposure to sunlight or tanning beds.
  • Do not use essential oils internally, unless under the supervision of a doctor or qualified practitioner. Remember that these oils are concentrated substances, and could be dangerous if ingested. Using the oils in massage or inhalation is safer and very effective.
