100% Pure Essential Oil – Why Purity Matters

Although the word aromatherapy makes it sound as if the therapeutic content of an essential oil is merely the scent, this is not really the case. The scent may indeed add something to the experience, but the healing property is bound up in the constituents contained in the essential oil, a complex natural blend which is distinct from one plant to another.

Even quite close related plants, such as dwarf pine and Scots pine, may have entirely different properties – so much so that while Scots pine has many uses in aromatherapy, dwarf pine has none at all.

Some plants produce more than one essential oil, depending on the part used. The bitter orange, for example, is used to create neroli essential oil from the blossom, petitgrain from the leaves and twigs and bitter orange oil from the fruit (or more correctly, the orange rind). All these are used for different purposes.

Pure essential oils are extracted from plants, usually by distillation. Whatever process is used ensures that all the chemical constituents are retained in their original proportions, uncorrupted by other substances. When you buy 100% pure essential oil you know that what you are getting will work as expected, without unwanted side effects.

However, many oils are rare and difficult to obtain. Some have always been difficult to source, and others are becoming more rare because demand has outstripped supply – due to a failure of sustainable horticulture. In fact, in many cases, the plants which produce the oils have simply been harvested from the wild, and there's obviously a limit to how often you can do this before stocks start to run out.

The result of this rarity combined with the huge demand of the market is that some unscrupulous suppliers have started to add impurities in an effort to boost the volume of product they have available for sale. Some of these claim that their additives are “nature identical” but if this was really the case, the resulting additions would be even more expensive than the product they are trying to imitate.

As already stated, essential oils contain a complex mixture of ingredients, and it's impossible to duplicate this exactly. There's only one thing identical to nature – and that's nature itself.

When you think about the subtle differences between the different oils extracted from the bitter orange plant and the different uses of each of them, it's clear that you need to be very sure that what you are getting is the actual genuine product and not some imitation cobbled together in a lab.

Even if the label on the bottle says “therapeutic grade”, if there's nothing guaranteeing the 100% purity of the oil, do not buy it. Make sure you buy oils which are labeled “100% pure essential oil” and that the supplier is reputable and well known for the quality of their products.

Today we are going to take a basic look at 'aromatherapy'.

Aromatherapy involves the application of essential oils (extracted from botanical sources) to the body – by way of massage, addition to bath water or inhalation – with a view to improving emotional and physical well being.

The use of essential oils as a medicine dates back for at least hundreds, and possibly thousands, of years. The theory is that a combination of the pharmacological effects of certain oils, and the effect of their aromas on the brain, can be used as a preventative aid or a treatment for certain diseases or conditions.

It was previously reported by the BBC that scientists had claimed to have found essential oils which destroyed MRSA and E.coli bacteria. Despite this, the possible benefits associated with aromatherapy remain unclear and it still does not appear to be an exact science.

While many of us accept the suggestion that peppermint oil, for instance, may be a helpful indigestion aid, or that the scent of lavender may help with relaxation, the practice of using essential oils as medicine remains complex. There are so many potential varieties of essential oil that to suggest the use of them as generally 'safe' would be very difficult, and could even be dangerous.

Some studies have appeared to show strong evidence of antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, antispasmodic, 'stress relieving' and other qualities in some essential oils, but others have found some oils (usually citrus types) to cause phototoxic reactions or suggest other causes for concern – such as skin irritation, toxicity to pets, and the possibility that some oils may mimic estrogens, which could cause conditions such as gynaecomastia (abnormal breast tissue growth).

  • 1 oz fine oatmeal
  • 1 oz dried lavender
  • 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 7 drops lavender essential oil

  • Grate the soap into a large ceramic bowl and sit this bowl in a large shallow pan of simmering water.
  • Add the 1/2 cup of water to the soap and stir the mixture until the soap dissolves.
  • Once the soap and water are dissolved, add the oatmeal and dried lavender and mix in well.
  • Remove from the heat, add the essential oil drops and mix in well.
  • Pour the mixture into a mold and leave to cool.
  • When completely cool, turn over the mold onto a plastic sheet or greaseproof paper and gently tap the bottom to release the soap.
  • Leave to dry for at least three days in a dark, warm place, then depending on the size of your molds, cut into pieces or keep whole.
  • Tie single or multiple soaps with a purple ribbon, attaching a piece of lavender as decoration or place a few soaps in a small, wooden box with some fresh lavender.

Thyme Herb and Uses in Aromatherapy

Thyme ( thymus vulgaris ) was derived from the Greek word meaning 'to fumigate'. The name also refers to spirit, strength and courage. It grows wild in the South and East Europe, the Mediterranean and in North America. There are a few kinds of thyme herb like the orange and lemon thyme but for this article I will be using French thyme. Its properties were fully recognized in ancient times. The main compound in thyme, thymol , is one of the strongest antiseptics known. At the same time, it is potentially toxic as well.

This sweet smelling herb imparts an aroma so fresh from the earth that it reminds me of a countryside after the rains. Its scent is strangely therapeutic for me. So fresh, so earthy, herbal and a little headier than rosemary. It is a perennial plant that grows to about 18 inches. It has many stems on a branch with woody root structure and white or dark lilac flowers. The Greeks used it as an incense and a symbol of courage while the Egyptians (as usual) found its use in their embalming process. It was also said that when burned, the aroma sent almost all creatures scurrying away. Its antiseptic properties made it common as a dressing for wounds. The plant can be used anytime of the year.

Internally, the herb whether fresh or dried, is used for digestive disorder, sore throat, fever, to improve health of individual cells in the body, to bolster nerves, to remove uric acid and treat cough. Thyme tea can help to induce perspiration at the start of a fever or cold episode. The warm action also helps to relieve muscular aches and spasms. Externally, the essential oil of thyme comes in handy. Put a few drops in a burner to alleviate exhaustion and depression. If using steam inhalation method, use the drops sparingly as too much thyme can be toxic. The oil is frequently used in toothpastes, mouthwashes, soaps and medicinally. Another few drops in a small bag in the closet would repel moth. Thyme essential oil helps with concentration, bronchitis, hair loss. Thyme is an intestinal antiseptic and useful for all kinds of bladder and urinary tract infections. It is not often used in cosmetics as the oil can be very irritating to the skin. Therefore do not use it in the bath. Pregnant women should avoid using it too.

Thyme herb can also keep food fresh from microbial activities. Use it to decontaminate and slow down the proliferation of bacteria in raw foods and sprinkle it generously to raw dishes. Research showed that it is an herb loaded with iron and manganese and also calcium. Along with cinnamon it is one of the most powerful oil to prevent infection. It may come in handy for people who are claustrophobic.

I love using dried thyme in my cooking especially chicken stew / soup. I found that thyme retains its flavor in slow cooking methods like with the crockpot. Just put chicken pieces, carrots, onions, white rice, half a teaspoon of dried thyme (more if using fresh leaves) water, vegetable stock and slow cook for 4 to 5 hours. When the aroma of thyme permeates the house, I know my stew is done. Simple, nutritious and full of goodness from the earth.

Aromatherapy Soy Candles Vs Paraffin Candles

Paraffin candles are the ones found most commonly in a household; they are also made with the by-products of petroleum, after everything else of value has been removed from the substance. The burning of paraffin candles releases a host of chemicals labeled as carcininogens by the EPA, and tend to release a large amount of soot as well. So, what's a person to do who wants to freshen up their home with the scent of a candle? One thing that should be noted, should you choose to invest in aromatherapy soy candles, is that the wax used has what is called a “memory memory.” What this means is that if the candle is not burned adequately with each use, then a pool will form that will prevent a candle from burning down past a certain point. The solution to this is to burn the candle for a certain length of time, one hour for every inch of diameter measured in a candle, each time you use it. This means you should not light a soy candle unless you are certainly certain you can burn it for at least an hour or more. But that is not so bad. You get to enjoy the aromatic oils just that much longer.

Basic maintenance of aromatherapy soy candles dictates that the wick should not be allowed to be longer than a quarter of an inch. If a wick is allowed to protrude further than this, it creates a fire hazard, as the flame of the candle will be that much larger. Use a pair of scissors to trim an unnecessarily large wicks.

Given the advantages of being cleaner burning, longering repeating, and more environmentally friendly, the choice to switch to an aromatherapy soy candle is an easy one.

If you have ever been to the Aloha State, among your most vivid memories are most likely the abundance of floral, tropical scents that permeate the air. You Can Find Relief For Nausea With Aromatherapy

I get my ideas for articles and blog posts from a lot of different sources; sometimes it is in the normal daily activities that I find inspiration. Well, my cat has been sick off and on for the past 1-2 months with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Quite messy-and I really do feel bad for the cat. Have you ever seen a cat throw up? It is painful just to watch. I finally took him to the vet, and he had blood work drawn, which came back normal. The diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome was made-did you know it is very common in cats? He was prescribed some medicine-hopefully it would get his digestive tract straightened out.

That episode got me to thinking. Too bad we can not use aromatherapy on animals. (If you saw my article on important facts you need to know about essential oils, a lot of them are toxic to animals, especially cats!) But as humans we can take advantage of the numerous essential oils to help relieve nausea. There are quite a few articles out there already on this subject; I found one by Kathi Keville written for Discovery Health entitled Aromatherapy Nausea Relief. This is an excellent article, with good basic information, listing of specific essential oils for different complaints and even a recipe for massage oil.

In the above mentioned article, peppermint, basil, chamomile, lemon balm, lemongrass, thyme, ginger, basil and dill are mentioned as being particularly effective in relieving nausea. I have found that ginger works best for me, especially in tea. Other essential oils that have been found to help remedy nausea are clove, lavender, oregano, sandalwood, spearmint and black pepper. Some herbs used in cooking and teas; others can be diluted in a carrier oil and massaged into the skin or diluted in the bath; but with any of these oils you can just simply place a few drops in an inhaler or on a tissue and inhale until you feel symptoms subsiding. Of course, you can just simply open the bottle of the oil and inhale straight from it.

Essential Oil Candles – Can They Relieve Stress?

The practice of aromatherapy has been around for millennia. Candles have probably been around for as long. However, the two were not united until reliably recently. First of all, there was a good medium for holding essential plant oils within wax until the invention of soy wax in 1992. Beeswax has been around for as long as candles have, but beeswax is expensive and is not the best medium for dispersing essential oils into the air. So at some point in the last decade or so, essential oil candles were born.

Probably one of the most common uses for essential oils and aromatherapy is to relieve stress. So you may ask, can essential oil candles help in relieving the stress of everyday life? Well, that depends on the candle that is being used. Aromatherapy can treat an extremely wide variety of conditions including stress, sexual dysfunction, concentration problems, lack of energy, depression, anxiety and just about every other psychological condition you can imagine. Aromatherapy can also be used to treat a wide variety of physical conditions, but essential oil candles are usually most effective when treating emotional and psychological conditions.

A few essential plant oils that are known to relieve stress are lavender, chamomile, frankincense and jasmine. Each type of oil serves a different purpose and they can also be used in unison. Rather than having an essential oil candle containing only single oils, it may be best to use blends of oils specifically created to treat a condition. For instance, to relieve stress due to anxiety, you may use a blend of lavender, rose oil, sandalwood, mandarin and chamomile. It is recommended that you use blends that have been blended by an aromatherapist. Aromatherapy candles are a tricky thing to create properly. There are also plenty of recipes online you can look up for free. Typically, they will tell you in terms of drops, what ratios to use of each type of oil.

So you have acquainted your essential oil candles made from pure essential plant oils and pure soy wax. Now you may ask, what now?

Take your essential oil candle into a quit and enclosed space. Light the candle and sit with it for at least a half hour. If there is too much ventilation in the room, you will not inhale enough of the essence of the oil. The key is also to focus on your body's ability to heal itself. Aromatherapy is as much of a meditative practice as it is a physical science. Repeat this process every day and track your results. If you do not see an improvement, you may be using the wrong mixture of oils.

Using essential oil candles should be an enjoyable process. It is not mainstream medicine and you should not treat it as such. When practicing aromatherapy, it is important that you believe in what you are doing as that will have an effect of the success or failure of the procedure.
